SOCA Conventions

History of TORCA / SOCA Conventions

In 1997, it was suggested at the then Toronto Area of Cocaine Anonymous, that we have a conference in the fall. A motion was made, and passed. Kerry N. who made the original motion, was the first Chairperson of the TORCA committee.

Several meetings later, a one-day conference took place at the Deerpark Christ Church, on October 25, 1997. The day was a success. The Banquet, prepared by a friend of the fellowship, was excellent.

The keynote speaker that evening was Johnny S., one of the co-founding members of Cocaine Anonymous. Johnny is no longer with us, but with 21 Conventions later, the Convention Committees have worked diligently to make each convention a success. This archive is a history of their successes.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the area convention is to promote enthusiasm and unity within the fellowship of Cocaine Anonymous, and financially support the local area’s effort to carry the message to the addict who still suffers.

Faulty Memories

“We can’t reliably distinguish true memories from false memories,” declares psychologist Elizabeth Loftus who studies memory, but in an unconventional way. “I don’t study when people forget,” she says. “I study when people remember things that didn’t happen. I study false memories.” It’s an issue that comes up often in courts, which highly values witness testimony. In a survey of 300 cases of wrongful conviction, where a person was later exonerated of a crime, three-quarters of them had been incarcerated due to faulty human memory.

Cocaine Anonymous Archive Standing Committee

The Archivist’s Serenity Prayer

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the collections I cannot decline… the courage to decline the collections I can… And the resources to process the backlog.”
